Haunted House Claims Victim

Pinned to the Notice Board

A boldly written and hand-inked parchment exclaims:

Haunted House Claims Victim

When we say a house is haunted and nobody should go in, the last thing people should be doing is going in on a dare or some other ridiculous reason. Now somebody who went in because they thought it was a joke hasn’t been seen since.

If you’re a member of a group of Capable Adventurers;

There’s a well-paying job waiting for you with the Guard Captain to hopefully rescue the person, plus a bonus for putting an end to whatever evil is lurking within those walls if possible.

If you don’t have your own clean & well-maintained weapons and armor, don’t even think about it.

Ways To Approach

Every town has its superstitions and legends. Features of the past that linger on into the present day, and often times you'll find yourselves confronted with a good ol' fashioned haunted house! While most people will know to steer clear, sometimes you need a good reason for the party to investigate - so here are two: being a big hero by rescuing somebody and vanquishing evil. Oh, and of course gold, so it’s more like 2.5 reasons. Bargain.

Rather than a standard job from the guard I wanted to throw in some sass from a captain who is utterly done with people messing with the thing that absolutely should not be messed with and really just wants the problem fixed once and for all, but I made sure to leave the task ambiguous enough that if the party should find themselves confronted with bandits or other some such 'normal' foe within the house instead of ghosts, they'll still technically be vanquishing the evil within and getting paid for it.

A fun potential twist is that a it seems like bandits are just faking a haunting to carry on with their goals uninterrupted, however, their leader turns out to be possessed by the ghost of the house and is using the group for some supernatural mischief. Foreshadowing with rumours and hearsay will be key - A mixture of odd occurrences that could easily be faked, with a sprinkle of things that can only be done by a ghost.
