Fort Needs New Owner

Pinned to The notice board

An ink-stained and scrawled on parchment reads:

Fort Veridian in need of new owner!

If you can defeat the Dragon made from storm clouds and lightning itself, as well as the vast hordes of servants it commands to terrorize those of us living in the surrounding area, then… the fort is yours!

Signed - Terrorized Residents

Ways to approach

Everyone knows of the storm clouds that permanently hang over the area around Fort Veridian. A wall of viciously pouring rain seems to encompass the area around it, and no soul has ever seen fit to venture beyond it. But now, a cry for help has come from within - Who dares to tread through the storm?

Short and sweet - This week's poster is to the point! Dragons can be smart and ruthless creatures, easily capable of ruling over their own land with an iron fist (or in this case a lightning fist). I can imagine that it came at a great cost for a citizen to get their message through, and it will be no easy feat to remove the creature from power... especially when they are more than just flesh and blood. A quest such as this is going to require preparation from the party, first before venturing within the area (as leaving may be difficult), and second tactfully gathering information and resources inside the dragon’s domain;

  • Before this poster even goes up it may be fun to introduce the art of harvesting lightning, something only a recluse seems to be making progress on.

  • Do the library or local temples have any information on this unique form of dragon? These can point the party in the direction of the ruins of long-forgotten warriors, who claim to have beaten such a creature. Exploring this could either lead the party to a special weapon or a secret weakness.

  • Are the residents able to provide a subtle way into the fort, allowing the party to attack from within? Or can the residents create a distraction to lessen the amount of minions inside?

Possible Repercussions

If the party opt to ignore this quest in favor of other ones then it is honestly unlikely the status quo will change for these terrorized residents. They won’t get better but they won’t get worse. Granted, the dragon will eventually seek to expand its domain but they generally live for very long amounts of time, which tends to make for patient creatures. Perhaps in the next campaign the world will be up against something far more formidable.
