Lava Rocks!
Pinned to The notice board
A dark parchment with messy inked writing reads;
Lava Rocks - And the stone is pretty great too!
The Bulging Barrel Distillery is looking for help in acquiring some lava stones! Apparently, these porous rocks formed from lava itself make for excellent water filters. Why does that matter to us when we already have clean water?
The quality of water used in brewing alcoholic beverages can drastically impact the flavor of any drink - So why not help us try to take some drinks to the next level of flavor!
The Dwarves of the north supposedly have an abundance of these stones which they use for similar purposes, however, they haven’t replied to any of our requests. If any person or persons can travel there and bring back at least a large sea chest’s worth of lava rocks, we will reward you handsomely with 4OO gold as well as a whiskey or ale named after you or your group!
Ways to approach
Pardon the modern slang at the beginning of the poster, but I just could not resist. The details sprinkled into here give a bunch of leeway on how comprehensive you would like to make this quest! The dwarves could simply be ignoring the request, or something terribly could be preventing them from responding, in which case they may be willing to provide a reward of their own for helping them out.
For me, contending with lava rocks also means the players should probably contend with lava (it feels a bit like a Chekov’s Gun situation). If you plan on keeping this simple, perhaps the party could contend with danger to collect the stones themselves… or perhaps it means defeating the lava elemental at the end of a dungeon crawl filled with fire and earth elementals attempting to take over the dwarven settlement.
Possible Repercussions
Depending on what kind of adventure you were wanting to run, as well as whether you’d like to incorporate any repercussions at all, the after-effects of the adventurers not taking this quest can range from a simple batch of poor-quality booze in the local area, to the incoming threat of a volcano eruption.
