Ways to approach
A good old bandit quest! At its core, the mission will have our party investigate where the attacks are taking place, track down the bandits, and put an end to their shenanigans. Undoubtedly they’ll have to provide proof of each bandit to the good Captain, something which is up to their discretion - this could be a trademark weapon, a bundle of armor each, or each bandit brought back in chains. The difficulty of this can easily be adjusted by the amount of bandits and their fortifications.
To make things more interesting we can consider what has put the bandits in this position - presumably it wasn’t always the case. Has a spell been placed on them by a mage to cause unrest in the region? Perhaps a dragon has nestled close to their previous encampment and they have fled here? Could this all be in retaliation for the guards slighting them? With these the problem is more complex than the party’s original brief and they’ll now have the option to solve this second, potentially harder, problem as a means of solving the first - however the rewards are likely to be worth it!
Possible Repercussions
If you’re wanting to have the world be affected in some way by the party not taking the job on this poster, it’d be a simple matter to make the roads more dangerous. This wouldn’t just apply to the adventurers whenever they decided to travel, it would affect patrolling guards and caravans that use these roads too. Supplies in stores might start to get thinned out from time to time, or there may be increased guard presence on the road meaning there’s less in the city which will have its own repercussions.
