Could this be an elaborate prank? Perhaps this artist did something wrong and wound up cursed because everyone else can see the art, but they can never look upon their own work again! In which case your party's job now becomes removing the curse in order to get the reward.
On the other hand, what if they had recently purchased an ink that, unbeknownst to them, allowed the drawings to come to life? In the middle of the night, the illustrations simply abandoned the pages and are unfortunately now wreaking havoc, under the control of the ink's seller.
