As a grand finale to every evening’s entertainment in The Wheeling Wagon’s fighting pit, we open the floor to any challenger to take on our current grand champion!
5 gold gets you in the ring, and if you make it out on top the prize is yours!
Ways to approach
Fighting pits are a part of fantasy TTRPGs that seem to come up time and time again, and what better way to get the word out there than with a grand prize attraction? Those are some pretty big numbers for the common folk to try and win, but the competition will certainly be fierce - You don't get called 'The Bone Breaker' for nothing.
Events like this are wonderful because they can be woven into your stories in so many different ways, and even if they're just a fun downtime activity you can really make a spectacle of the attraction.
Your players could be told to meet at this tavern in order to gain information, however, the NPC will only part with the information if one of the PCs goes toe to toe against The Bone Breaker - win or lose, it's just fun entertainment to them. Although the NPC may make it seem like a victory is needed. Alternatively, the pit leader here may be using the fighters for unsavory tasks around town, including renting them out to the arc's villain.
There are always bound to be bets happening around events like this, which your party could get in on, but there are going to be other hopeful fighters too. It's likely that there are some NPCs who could do with the grand prize more than the players and hearing their stories may call the party into action. Whether it be a training montage, finding ways to sabotage the champion, or even putting themselves in the pit on the NPC's behalf (for a cut of the prize, of course).
