Update: Upcoming Site Changes

As some of you may have seen on twitter, I’m going to be changing the structure and focus of Of Metal and Magic. Some of which reflect what feels like natural progression given the attention the site has been getting and some of which feel like necessary changes to make to improve the site as a whole. The first of which will address the problem you undoubtedly picked up on right at the start, and that’s to be less reliant on Twitter to disseminate information. While it is a social media platform and it may have been the main reason most of you found this website and the content here, it’s a failing of mine to not post updates here because of an intent to keep the website content focused. From now on I’ll be posting updates on further plans or changes to scheduling, website restructuring, or anything relevant.
The rest of the updates relate to the content we’ll be producing. Originally Of Metal and Magic had a primary focus on creating content for just one TTRPG system, with posts here and there which could be applied to most any other TTRPG. Ultimately I would like to move to a more system agnostic approach, providing content that can be picked up and used by anyone in any game they like. While I’ll be keeping as much as I can on the site I anticipate a lot of the content which we already have for the Dungeons and Dragons system will slowly be compiled and moved. I’m not entirely sure where, yet. The most likely option is onto DTRPG. If this is the case it will all be at a PWYW price-point - The mentality behind OMaM was to create for everyone, which means no pay walls.
On the subject of creating content for everyone, something has bothered me about the tavern posters for a while. These started out as a fun side projects and have grown into something so much more. With written posts coming out once every two weeks, and posters being shared once a week, the attention the website was getting naturally shifted to be centered more on the posters - even if the site layout doesn’t reflect that. As such the site will be going through some restructuring over the next week or so in order to not only make these easier to navigate through, but also more accessible. The aspect that’s bothered me about the posters is that they’re only presented as images in a gallery. There are no titles and no e-reader access to communicate what is on them. Slowly but surely I’ll be transferring everything over to their own full posts in order to have better accessibility to the content, but to also provide additional inspiration or GM guides for each poster. So far this will be the template I’ll be working towards: [The updated style can now be found here]. This will require a new section of the site, and I’ll be working from oldest to newest, updating the posters as I am able.
The consequences of these changes may mean I’ll be less able to provide written posts every other week, certainly while everything is restructuring. I’ll still be creating a new tavern poster every week and posting them to the original job board, and once all of the changes have been put in place I’ll be figuring out how best to manage this new workload shift and updating you again!
Thank you all for your patience and for being on this ride with me. It’s wonderful to have you all here.
