Non-Combat Random Encounters #1

What happens with your players while they travel? You could have bugbears attack again, but always throwing combat at your players can become stale. To mix things up throw in potentially role play centered encounters. These small events won’t necessarily progress the plot, but they are a good way to add to the world and make it feel more alive. If we do this right you should be able to pick one and read it straight out of this document. Just remember that these are simple prompts to help spark your imagination, not full fledged ideas. Not sure which to pick? Roll a dice! The 12 sided one needs more love.

  1. You come up to a small bridge that goes over a small slow lazy creek which is less than a foot wide and deep. On the other side of the bridge are two human males. One that is large for a human leaning on a quarterstaff, and the other is small and this juggling knives.

  2. You pass a cottage on your left. With every step closer you get, you notice the front door seemingly opens wider.

  3. Walking down the trail towards your group is a male human in straw hat humming a jolly tune. He seems to be carrying a bunch of instruments.

  4. As you round a corner a ferret wearing a bandanna zips past you. You hear someone yell “ Don’t let Bandit Keith get away!”

  5. As your right you hear “mrow”, you look over and a dozen black cats are sitting, staring, waiting

  6. A golden colored Mastiff waits at the top of the hill. When you get up to it, it lets out a small “woof”, nods, and starts walking away. It takes a couple steps, looks back, woofs, and takes a couple more steps.

  7. As your party passes a wheat field you notice that the scarecrow is actually a person standing on stilts and they seem to be staring daggers into your group

  8. As your party passes some bushes you hear “Feed me”

  9. Walking down the road you see 3 dwarves staring at a mirror that is leaning up a tree.

  10. As your party enters a small clearing they see 2 humans arguing over what appears to be a boulder. The boulder also happens to be in your way.

  11. A glint of light catches your eye from within one of the nearby trees. It seems to be a simple birdwatcher.

  12. Walking towards you is a young Gnomish man riding atop a donkey by the looks of it. Strapped to the sides are bags upon bags upon bags. Perhaps a merchant? Or perhaps somebody running away from home?
